Mentoring
The primary role of a mentor is to act as a positive role model. It is about intelligent listening and providing a supportive relationship. You don't have to be a high powered CEO or senior manager to be able to mentor someone. We all have something to give.
Who can you mentor?
- Young people
- Unemployed people
- Teaching staff and Head Teachers
- Senior staff in public bodies eg the Fire Service or the Police
- Directors of community organisations
What are the benefits for a mentor?
- Developing skills such as: listening and questioning skills; problem solving techniques; project management; planning and progress management; and providing impartial advice
- Becoming more aware of social issues
- Building a mutually beneficial relationship
Things to consider if mentoring young people:
- Prior to beginning a mentoring relationship you will need to undergo a police check followed by some training
- Once matched with a student, a programme of meetings will be agreed between the mentor and student. You can act as a mentor for up to 3 students
- In order to build a relationship, you must be able to commit to the scheme for a reasonable time-period, eg a minimum of 6 months
As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others. Abraham Lincoln |
